As researchers aiming for an academic research career, we often ask: why should we do research? how do we get started? what are the important things to work on? How do we produce high impact works? How do I enjoy life through research? In this talk, I will reflect on some of my own experiences in answering these questions.
Qiang Yang is a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests are in Artificial Intelligence planning, machine learning and data mining. He received his B.Sc. in Astrophysics at Peking University in 1982 and Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Maryland, College Park in 1989. He then joined the faculty of the University of Waterloo in Canada. In 1995 he became an NSERC Industry Research Chair at Simon Fraser University in Canada. He is now a professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of IEEE, member of AAAI and ACM. He is a co-winner of two ACM KDDCUP Data Mining championships. He is the author of over 200 research papers and two books: Intelligent Planning (Springer 1997) and Constraint-Based Design Recovery for Software Reengineering, with Steven Woods and Alexander Quilici (Springer, 1998).
