Aims


MSc in IT Management

The programme aims to educate IT managers and professionals who possess technical and management knowledge for designing, developing and managing IT systems. It provides a transformational experience in integrating the technological and managerial sides of IT. On completion of this programme, students should be able to achieve the following programme intended learning outcomes:

  1. Explain the core technical and management concepts and apply these concepts in an integrated manner for IT management.
  2. Explain and apply the current methodologies in some selected areas in IT management (such as IT enterprise management, knowledge and information management, Internet and web technologies, and business analytics).
  3. Identify business needs and explain the process of transforming business needs into IT systems.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should normally:

  1. possess a Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, business or other relevant fields from a recognized university or equivalent qualification; and
  2. If applicants did not use English as the medium of learning in their bachelor’s degree programmes, they should satisfy any one of the following English proficiency requirements:
    • An IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0;
    • A TOEFL score of at least 537 (paper-based) or 74 (Internet-based);
    • Other equivalent qualifications (e.g. CET-6 score of at least 450, CEFR level C1 or above)

For exceptional cases in which applicants have other qualifications and substantial experience in IT, we will determine their suitability based on individual merits and interviews.

Programme Structure

Each student is required to complete 29 units as follows:

8 units of core courses
Each student must complete four core courses which cover the foundations of IT and management. However, if she/he has a Bachelor's degree in IT or closely related fields or has taken equivalent courses, she/he must substitute the core course "Foundations of Information Technology" by an elective course.
21 units of elective courses
The elective courses are divided into four streams and MSc Project & Research:
• Stream 1 − IT Enterprise Management
• Stream 2 − Knowledge and Information Management
• Stream 3 − Internet and Web Technologies
• Stream 4 − Business Analytics
• MSc Project & Research
Each student is required to select at least three streams among the four streams and successfully complete at least one course in each selected stream.

In addition, if a student does not have adequate programming experience, she/he is required to take a 32-hour Supplementary Programming course (which will be offered in Saturdays or Sundays).

The courses are listed as follows. The courses offered in each year depend on enrollment and staff availability.

Programme Duration and Study Schedule

Students can select either one-year full-time study mode or two-year part-time study mode.

Classes will be conducted on weekday nights and Saturdays, so that both part-time and full-time students can attend these classes. Some courses may be offered in the daytime for full-time students. Students will also attend full-day classes (from 9:30am - 5:30pm) on two Saturdays in the first semester of the first year.

For full-time study, the normal study schedule is as follows:

Programme Fee

The tuition fee for the entire programme is HK $120,000.

If a student cannot complete the programme within the normal study schedule,  he/she is required to pay extra tuition fee.

Financial Support

Continuing Education Fund:

The Hong Kong SAR Government has set up a Continuing Education Fund (CEF) to subsidize Hong Kong residents to pursue continuing education. Some core and elective courses of this M.Sc. programme have been included in the list of reimbursable courses for CEF purposes. Scholarships:

High Distinction/Distinction/Merit Scholarships are provided to students with very good academic performance. Each student can obtain at most HK $24,000.

Entrance Scholarships are provided to freshmen with excellent academic records in their undergraduate studies. Each recipient can receive at most HK $50,000.

  • The M.Sc. programme focuses on IT Management. Students will acquire a transformational experience in integrating the technological and managerial sides of IT.
