Prof. Victor Lesser, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Multi-Agent Systems Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts, was invited to deliver a Distinguished Lecture on “A 50-Year Personal Odyssey in Computer Science” on 12 November 2012. Starting the lecture with an inspiring sharing of his early research which focuses on distributed operation systems, information retrieval and multi-processor architectures as early as 1961, Prof. Lesser discussed his transition from a Computer Architect to an AI Systems Architect and finally to a renowned expert in multi-agent systems. The lecture was ended with a brief discussion of his current research focus. Throughout the lecture, Prof. Lesser stressed the importance of sustaining intellectual passion and curiosity, which brought great encouragement and inspirations to both our faculty members and research postgraduate students.
Prof. Lesser received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, 1973. His major research focus is on the control and organization of complex AI systems. He has pioneered work in the development of the blackboard architecture and its control structure, approximate processing for use in control and real-time AI, and a wide variety of techniques for the coordination of and negotiation among multiple agents. Considered one of the founders of the multi-agent systems field starting with his early work in 1978, he has also made contribution in many areas and his research accomplishments have been recognized by many major awards over the years.
