COMP Co-Organises the First Data and Media Hackathon

Data and Media Hack was co-organized by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Journalism.


The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Journalism of HKBU co-organized a Hong Kong-wide Data and Media Hack 2019 (DMH 2019) in HKBU from 25 January to 27 January 2019. The event is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, combining hackathon with the elements of data and media. It attracted more than 100 young talents from seven local higher institutions participated in the challenge.

Ziwei Wang (a year 3 student of Data and Media Communication Concentration), teamed up with six teammates from HKU, HKUST and CityU, won the championship in the final presentation after a 48-hour non-stop competition. Their Team CYDA, also securing the “Wisers AI Innovation Award” as a special award selected by one of the sponsors, Wisers Information Limited. The finals required participating teams to apply advanced data analysis tools and deliver data-driven solutions during the intensive 48 hours competition.

The solution of the winning team was to energize elders’ life based on text analysis of their social media posting. Meanwhile, they inserted Wisers API to realize emotion recognition and sentiment analysis. Prototype was created to let people have a better understanding of the elder’s daily life and emotional needs.

Besides, The Senior Team won the 2nd Runner up, they had two students from the Department of Computer Science - Can He (a Master student from Information Technology Management) and Chao Song (a Master student from Advanced Information Systems).

One of the champion team members, Ziwei Wang said it is blessed to be a member of the champion team. She also shared her feeling of being a DMC student. “It is amazing how my role changes while being a team player — from problem, finding to problem, solving. And I do enjoy the changes.”

The main supporting body of this event, Data and Media Communication Concentration (DMC) is a young and cutting-edged concentration in HKBU. With the aim of facilitating the interdisciplinary teaching, learning and discussion on data-driven reporting, DMC has dedicated to exploring further in this big data era.
