The Postgraduate Research Symposium (PG Day) is targeted to keep track of students’ research progress and enhance their performance, as well as allowing them to share ideas among professors and students. It has become an essential event in the Department of Computer Science. This year, the 23rd PG Day was carried out on June 19th, 2020 via zoom meeting.
Two online invited talks were conducted and nearly 100 audiences were attracted to attend. Dr. Alexander Wong from University of Waterloo, Canada delivered the first invited talk on “COVID-Net: Open Source Deep Learning Initiative for COVID-19 Detection from Chest Radiography”. In the talk, Dr. Wong introduced COVID-Net, a global deep learning initiative for COVID-19 detection and risk stratification from chest radiography that is open source and available to the general public.
The second talk was conducted by Prof. Jiming Liu from Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University. Prof. Liu delivered a talk on “How Computer Science and AI Can Help Save the World from Deadly Infectious Diseases”. In the talk, Prof. Liu shared some of the stories in a journey of translating exciting computer science research into socially impactful solutions in infectious disease control and prevention, e.g., in combating the outbreaks of malaria, swine flu, and COVID-19. Both talks were full of constructive interaction and well received.
There were totally 26 postgraduate students who present their research work on PG day. The topics covered Database Management, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Information System, Data Mining, Health Informatics, Complex System, Autonomy-oriented Computing, and Networking and Optimization.
The PG Day organizing committee thanks the active participation of faculty members and postgraduate students. It is their effort that makes this symposium a successful event.
