Abstract
A recent paradigm shift in translational research has placed the role of cutting-edge translational technologies that enable innovative solutions at the forefront of efforts to improve patient care; this model is an ideal opportunity to build a community and creating infrastructure by bringing together clinical investigators, applied and basic research scientists, and industry scientists around new enabling technologies to solve pressing problems for example of conducting research in cancer patients and ultimately to improve our methods of treating the disease. My talk will provide an example of translational research using cutting edge translational technologies, particularly in the experience of bringing an idea from the laboratory to first-in-human trials (so called T1 translational research) as well as the framework that can be used for building the infrastructure for international collaborative opportunities that can evolve to the formation science clusters, science parks and entrepreneurial ecosystems. My talk will also highlight the recent establishment of the Harvard Medical School - China translational medicine consortium.

Biography
Dr. Kuo is a clinical and translational researcher, Assistant Professor in the Department of Developmental Biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Director of the Harvard Catalyst - Laboratory for Innovative Translational Technologies at Harvard Medical School. He established the Laboratory for Innovative Translational Technologies (LITT) to provide the Harvard research community with early access to enabling leading edge translational technologies, which is now an integral part of the Harvard Catalyst Clinical and Translational Science Center at Harvard Medical School. The HC-LITT's model is a collaborative one that interfaces between academics and industry, and its goal is to build communities including public private partnerships around a myriad of technologies in one place and put them to use in the hands of inventors and thought leaders to accelerate the translation of laboratory research in therapeutics and diagnostics into the clinic. Dr. Kuo is very active nationally as well as internationally; he sits and advises on the Public-Private-Partnership and Translational CTSA Key Function Committees at the NIH. Dr. Kuo's clinical and translational initiatives has expanded globally in developing countries such as Brazil, China, Nigeria and South Africa with the hopes to create a framework to accelerate the understanding of mechanisms of human disease and its heterogeneity of expression, to catalyze the identification and development of biomarkers that aid in this process, and to speed the development of therapeutics in patients. This requires an interactome of people from science, technology, regulatory and business space that have good relationship and management skills. He received his dental degree from Columbia University and completed his pediatric dentistry from the University of Southern California. In addition, he received his DMSc in oral biology from Harvard University and Masters of Science in medical informatics from the Health Science and Technology program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
