Abstract
Syntactic matching algorithms match without considering any domain knowledge and may lead to inaccurate or even wrong matches. Therefore, semantic matching techniques, such as schema matching and concept matching are required. Semantic matching is important in many research areas including databases, e-Business, case-based reasoning (CBR), information retrieval, information integration, web services and natural language processing. This seminar presents a review of semantic matching techniques. A novel weighted-tree representation is proposed for representing information in e-Business and e-Learning environments. Semantic similarity algorithms are developed for objects (e.g. products and services) employing such a tree representation. These algorithms have been incorporated into prototypes for e-Business and e-Learning applications.

Biography
Virendrakumar (Virendra) C. Bhavsar received the B.Eng. (Electronics and Telecommunications) from University of Poona, India, and the M.Tech. (Electrical Eng.) and Ph.D. (Electrical Eng.) degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.), Bombay. He holds the Information Systems Professional (ISP) designation from CIPS, Canada. He was the Chair, IEEE New Brunswick Section for 1999-2002. Dr. Bhavsar was on the faculty of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, I.I.T. Bombay from 1974-83. Since 1983 he has been at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, where he is currently a Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science. He was the Dean of the Faculty from 2003-08 and now he is on a one-year sabbatical leave. He is also the founding Director of the Advanced Computational Research Laboratory that houses two high performance computing clusters serving the university and the region. Recently, he was involved in the Atlantic Computational Excellence Network (ACEnet) – about $30 million high performance computing initiative in Atlantic Canada. He has authored over 140 research papers in journals and conference proceedings and has edited three volumes. His current research interests include parallel and distributed processing, artificial intelligence applications in e-Business, e-Learning and bioinformatics, and the semantic web.
