Abstract
Data management research during the relational era can boast of astounding commercial success as RDBMS has become the bread and butter for almost all Fortune 500 companies. However, in recent years, the popularity and success of deep learning technology have propelled artificial intelligence (AI) to be the talking point in media as well as in research communities. Particularly, AI venues (e.g., NIPS, AAAI, IJCAI) have seen exponential increase in the number of submissions and participants. Citations of many papers related to AI and machine learning have seen exponential growth. The potential of AI continues to dominate the technology news sections of many offline and online media. In this “AI world”, what role can data management researchers play? In this talk, we engage the audience with our recent work on how data management research can still play a pivotal role in this new world order. We highlight our efforts to address novel data management problems that are at the intersection of AI, HCI, or systems biology. In particular, we emphasize on the potential benefits of non-DB domains and areas to data management and vice versa.

Biography
Sourav S Bhowmick is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE), Nanyang Technological University. He leads the data management research group (DANTE) in SCSE. He was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Biological Engineering Division, Massachusetts Institute of Technology during 2007-2013. His current research interests include data management, data analytics, computational social science and network-based systems biology. He has published more than 80 papers in top-tier venues such as VLDB, SIGMOD, WWW, SIGIR, ACM MM, Bioinformatics, Biophysical Journal, and VLDB Journal. He has received Best Paper Awards at ACM CIKM 2004 and ACM BCB 2011 for papers related to evolution mining and biological network summarization, respectively. His work on influence maximization was nominated for the best paper award in ACM SIGMOD 2015. His XML data management framework for biological data was adopted by a local startup HeliXense Pte Ltd in 2002. Sourav regularly serves as a reviewer for data management, data mining, and bioinformatics conferences (e.g., SIGMOD, VLDB) and journals (e.g., VLDB Journal, Bioinformatics). He has served as a program chair/co-chair of several international conferences including IEEE BigComp 2018, DASFAA 2014, DEXA 2009, and DEXA 2008. He has been keynote and tutorial speaker for several international conferences (including SIGMOD, VLDB). Recently, he has co-authored a book on “Summarizing Biological Networks”, which is published by Springer-Verlag (May 2017).
