Computer Science PhD Student Wins Best Poster Award at Academic Forum

14 Oct 2010

Mr. Wilman Zou, PhD student of Computer Science, won the Best Poster Award for his research paper entitled "Discriminability and Reliability Indexes: Two New Measures to Enhance Multi-image Face Recognition" at the 5th Beijing-Hong Kong International Doctoral Forum. Organised by the Tsinghua University in Beijing, the forum attracted over 50 doctoral students from around the world.

The winning research project, the highlights of which were displayed in a poster at the forum, focuses on improving the multi-image based face recognition system. Two new measurements were proposed to estimate the usability of the photo gallery and probe images for face recognition. These two measurements can be integrated with most of the existing multi-image based face recognition systems to improve their performance. Experiments show that the two measurements can improve the recognition rate by up to 10 per cent.

Wilman said the forum greatly enriched his research experience. He said: "My special gratitude goes to Professor Liu Jiming, Head of Computer Science, and my supervisor Professor Yuen Pong-chi for their guidance and encouragement, and also to the Department of Computer Science for their great support."
