A team of computer science students won the First Class Award in Student Supercomputer Challenge 2017 (ASC17) held in 24-28 April 2017. Among 230 teams from over the world, HKBU team reached the ASC Final as one of the Top 8 teams.

Led by Dr. Chu Xiaowen, Associate Professor, Computer Science and Mr. Xu Pengfei, a HKBU graduate, the team of five computer science students namely WANG Shihao (Year 2), ZOU Xueyan (Year 3), CHEONG Chin Wang (Year 3), WEI Wenzhou (Year 4) and HO Chun San (Year 4), is the only team in Hong Kong entered the final.

One of the team members, ZOU Xueyan thanked Dr. Chu and the other team members for supporting the team. Xueyan thought her team had learnt a lot through the competition completion. She said it was a valuable chance for learning and bordering horizon.

ASC17 is the largest supercomputing contest in the world. After two-month preliminary matches, 20 teams were selected to attend the finals held in the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, China. The finals required participating teams to design their own supercomputing system within the constraint of 3000 watts and apply it to seven frontier scientific and engineering projects.
