About Data and Media Hack 2019 (DMH2019)

Data and Media Hack 2019 (DMH 2019) will set the stage for innovation, calling on teams consisting of students with their mentors from various backgrounds to address social or commercial issues that matter to our future. We are driven by a vision to bring talents and professionals together at HKBU, to share impactful insights, discover business opportunities, learn emerging media and communication technologies, and deploy data-driven projects.

In a 48-hour time span, participants are expected to apply knowledge and skills from data analytics, media and communication, artificial intelligence, business, design, education, and others to solve the most prominent problems that are faced by industries, and to bring value and impact through an innovative way. Participants shall choose one (among the three) topic and embark on your data journey.



  • Health and Ageing Issues

  • This theme aims to find innovative solutions to the most prominent healthcare problems in our society. A particular focus will be ageing problems, which is quite urgent in Hong Kong. The focus is to build solutions for supporting people in their later years of life.
  • Leisure, Retail and Tourism

  • The leisure, retail, and tourism industry are now the pillar of the economy in some of the fastest growing countries, and also representing most citizens' life attitudes. Under this theme, participants are expected to reform the leisure, retail, and tourism industries by innovative data-driven solutions. The topics can cover green traveling, unmanned convenience stores, achieving customized travelling experience, etc. The topic of travelling will certainly lead to many unprecedented possibilities!
  • Media, Culture, and Entertainment

  • Topics in this theme include cultural products or cultural artifacts, including film, graphics, literary arts, music, and multimedia contents. Try to come up with a new and innovative way that users either experience, consume, or create entertainment/media.

Mr. Kevin Cai

CIO of Hospital Authority Hong Kong

Mr. Kevin CAI serves as the Chief Information Officer of Hospital Authority Hong Kong since 2015, building and transforming one of world’s largest healthcare IT system for all public hospitals across Hong Kong. Prior to that Kevin assumed the CIO role in China Eastern Airlines for over 5 years. He rebuilt the entire IT capability and enabled China Eastern to become the 5th largest and one of the most profitable airlines in the world. He received China’s Best CIO Award for 3 years consecutively since 2010.

Prior to China Eastern, Kevin assumed various IT roles in Cathay Pacific Airways, Dragonair, Hong Kong Airport Authority and IBM Australia. Kevin also advised IBM as Board of Advisors for 4 years since 2011, and took up Board Directorship in global companies such as SITA and Travelsky. He holds an Executive MBA degree from China Europe International Business School, and received a Master degree from Australia’s Monash University.

Mr. CK Lau

Principal Lecturer, Associate Dean, School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University

Mr. Lau is a graduate of the English Journalism Programme of the Communication Department of Hong Kong Baptist College, the predecessor of today’s Journalism Department. He obtained his MA degree from the University of Minnesota. Mr Lau joined the South China Morning Post in the early 1980s as a reporter and rose to become the Editor-in-Chief in 2007. He has also worked for The Australian in Sydney and for Wah Kiu Yat Po, and was Chief Press Information Officer of the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

In 2010, Mr Lau joined the Department of Journalism as a Principal Lecturer. He was a recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching in 2015. Mr Lau has been active in professional bodies, having served as a board member of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong and an executive member of the Hong Kong News Executives’ Association. He is currently the Executive Director of The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong and a director of both the Journalism Education Foundation and Hong Kong News-Expo.

Prof Alice Lee is the Head of the Department of Journalism. She has various sorts of media experience in Hong Kong. She is a co-founder and vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Association of Media Education (HKAME). She has started promoting media and information literacy (MIL) after she joined the Editorial and Advisory Committee of UNESCO which developed the global MIL assessment framework. In Hong Kong, Professor Lee is a member of the Steering Committee on Strategic Development of Information Technology in Education, Educational Bureau, HKSAR Government.

Registration

  • 1. Am I eligible to participate?
    • All the full-time students in the higher education institutions in Hong Kong - undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research degree students - are welcome!
  • 2. When is the registration deadline?
    • Registration will open to all prospective participants between 20 November and 31 December, 2018. Please remember to sign up as soon as you can!
  • 3. How can I register?
    • To register, simply fill out the form found right here on our website. Due to the space limit, we will select up to 100 applicants based on your background and personal statement. The selected applicants will be notified through email.
  • 4. How much does it cost to attend?
    • The hackathon is FREE of charge! But 200HKD need to be deposited to lock your seat for each selected applicant. It is refundable if the participant attends the whole hackathon.
  • 5. Can I sign up with a team?
    • Yes. You can build your team before the event. But each participant needs to fill in the registration form for his/her own. We strongly encourage you to form the team on-site, however.
  • 6. How many people can be on a team?
    • Teams are limited to a maximum of 5 students, but shall be more than 3 students.

Preparing for the hack

  • 1. What should I bring during the event?
    • Your ticket, valid student ID, electronics, and your passion to build something great.
  • 2. Do I need to know how to code?
    • Not at all! Our hackathon is designed as an inclusive event that brings all sorts of people together, and everyone can contribute in their own way.
      What really matters is how you combine your different skill sets within your team. Our advice is that the more diverse participating teams are, the more diverse and innovative solutions will be.
  • 3. Can I work on my hack before the event?
    • No, you can start thinking on the topic then pitch your idea during the event. Data and media hack is designed to be an effective platform for growing new ideas from the ground up over the course of a weekend. We highly value the spirit of complete collaboration, buy-in, and ownership.

On-site activities

  • 1. What kind of workshops and activities will be hosted?
    • There are several insightful workshops for you to freely attend. The themes will include but not be limited to Apps Development, Data Analytics (e.g., using Python, R, Excel), Data Visualization, Multimedia, Business Model, Design Thinking, among others!
  • 2. Can our group stay overnight?
    • Due to safety concern, we don’t have overnight stay. But the venue opens at 8:00AM and will close at 9:00PM during the event. You are always welcome to stay longer.
  • 3. What do you offer during the hackathon?
    • We offer free food, swag, prizes, and much more for your enjoyment!

Deliverable and aftermath issues

  • 1. What is the expected outcomes or deliverable of this event?
    • DMH is an innovative competition with unlimited possibilities! The final deliveries could be an interactive project, a news story, a video, a prototype, a computer application, a game, and so on.
  • 2. Can I use my group’s results after the event?
    • The actual ownership belongs to the team itself. The team should reach a consensus and decide how to address Intellectual Property issue. Our hackathon may only ask for the publishing right to upload teams’ projects on our website and/or other social media channels.
