Smart, Interactive and Mobile -- Digital Innovation Technologies and Applications

Event Highlight

The Department of Computer Science hosted its Open Day on 22 March 2014. More than 300 participants including secondary school students and the general public attended the event.

World renowned scholars Professor Rama Chellappa from the University of Maryland, College Park, and Professor Walter Gander from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich gave public lectures entitled “How to Make a Computer See the World Like a Human?” and “Computer Science is Cool! --- Why?” respectively.

The Computer Science Open Day which had the theme “SIM - Smart, Interactive and Mobile” is one of the major events celebrating the Department’s 25th anniversary. Activities including public lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations, mobile app workshops and the first Mind Drive Competition for secondary school students were held to introduce the latest digital innovations to the public and to share how HKBU integrates these technologies into teaching and learning.

How to Make a Computer See the World Like a Human?

Abstract

Over the past five decades, scientists and engineers have struggled to design computers that can ingest data from one or more cameras and "understand" the world around them. While significant advances have been made in many areas, computers are not able to compete with humans in tasks such as object recognition. This talk will first outline the progress made in computer understanding of an object’s shape, texture, motion and its material. Prof. Chellappa will also present examples where computers can perform better than humans. The challenges that remain to be solved in designing a robust and practical computer vision system will then be outlined.

Biography

Prof. Rama Chellappa received the B.E. (Hons.) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Madras, India in 1975 and the M.E. (with Distinction) degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1977. He received the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. Degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 1978 and 1981 respectively. During 1981-1991, he was a faculty member in the department of EE-Systems at University of Southern California (USC). Since 1991, he has been a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and an affiliate Professor of Computer Science at University of Maryland (UMD), College Park. He is also affiliated with the Center for Automation Research, the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (Permanent Member) and is serving as the Chair of the ECE department. In 2005, he was named a Minta Martin Professor of Engineering. His current research interests are face recognition, clustering and video summarization, 3D modeling from video, image and video-based recognition of objects, events and activities, dictionary-based inference, compressive sensing, domain adaptation and hyper spectral processing.

Prof. Chellappa received an NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, four IBM Faculty Development Awards, an Excellence in Teaching Award from the School of Engineering at USC, and two paper awards from the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). He is a recipient of the K.S. Fu Prize from IAPR. He received the Society, Technical Achievement and Meritorious Service Awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He also received the Technical Achievement and Meritorious Service Awards from the IEEE Computer Society. At UMD, he was elected as a Distinguished Faculty Research Fellow, as a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, received an Outstanding Innovator Award from the Office of Technology Commercialization, and an Outstanding GEMSTONE Mentor Award from the Honors College. He received the Outstanding Faculty Research Award and the Poole and Kent Teaching Award for Senior Faculty from the College of Engineering. In 2010, he was recognized as an Outstanding ECE by Purdue University. He is a Fellow of IEEE, IAPR, OSA and AAAS. He holds four patents.

Prof. Chellappa served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He has served as a General and Technical Program Chair for several IEEE international and national conferences and workshops. He is a Golden Core Member of the IEEE Computer Society and served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Recently, he completed a two-year term as the President of the IEEE Biometrics Council.

Computer Science is Cool! -- Why?

Abstract

In this talk we describe the fascination of computer science. The term "Computer Science" was coined 1963 by Professor George Forsythe, the founder of the Computer Science Department at Stanford University in California. Since then the area has developed enormously. All other sciences have profited from this new science. "Computational Science and Engineering" has emerged as the "third mode of discovery" (next to theory and experimentation). We demonstrate a few examples for this development.

Biography

Prof. Walter Gander is Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his Diploma in mathematics from ETH Zürich in 1968. He received Ph.D. in mathematics in 1973, supervised by Prof. P. Henrici He has been the Professor for numerical analysis and computer science at the engineering college Neu-Technikum Buchs; Visiting Scientist at Stanford University; Habilitation and Privatdozent for numerical analysis at ETHZ.

Prof. Gander was the head of the Institute of Scientific Computing from 1989 to 1997; the chairmen of the faculty of computer science from 1990-92; the head of the Swiss Supercomputer Initiative for acquiring the national supercomputer in Manno from 1989-1991 and also the chairman of the department and director of education of computer science from Fall 1997 to Fall 2001.
