Programme Title

Double Degree Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science (Data and Media Communication Concentration) and Bachelor of Journalism programme offered in collaboration with the University of Queensland


Introduction

This is a four-year full-time undergraduate programme whereby students study at the two universities, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and The University of Queensland (UQ), and graduate from both. On completing the programme requirements, students will obtain two bachelor’s degrees, namely Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science (Data and Media Communication Concentration) conferred by HKBU, and Bachelor of Journalism conferred by UQ.

Duration

Students are required to study for a total of 4 years, 2.5 years at HKBU and 1.5 years at UQ. Students will spend their first five semesters at HKBU, followed by three semesters at UQ.

Programme Aims

The double degree programme combines the essence of the existing undergraduate programmes of HKBU and UQ, with the aim to provide BSc students with a specialisation in journalism and digital media with a global perspective.

The Computer Science major at HKBU prepares students for a career in computer science or information technology-related areas. The programme equips students with a solid and broad foundation in a Computer Science major. Students will advance to gain in-depth knowledge in Journalism at UQ. The Journalism major offers a sequence of courses dealing with journalism, contemporary media practices, institutions, and technologies. Students will learn a combination of critical analytics, research, production, management, and planning skills related to contemporary media industries.

Graduates of this double degree programme will have developed effective learning strategies, along with the skills and confidence to meet the challenges in the rapidly changing information technology world, the continuous evolution of media technologies and industries, and the interactive and data-driven platforms.

Programme Structure

In order to fulfil the graduation requirements of respective programmes, students are required to complete 32+35+19+3 = 89 units at HKBU and 8+16 = 24 units at UQ respectively. Detailed structure is subject to revision and will be announced later.

Eligibility

  • Year Two students of Computer Science Major (Applicable to students admitted to Year 1 from September 2025 onwards)
  • Attain semester GPA 3.3 or above for all semesters, resulting in a cumulative GPA 3.3 or above
  • Good command of English (overall score of 6.5 and at least 6.0 in each of sub-band in IELTS; or acceptable scores in equivalent tests as stated by UQ).

Financial Proof

As the department is student’s financial guarantor to UQ, students need to provide financial proof (around HKD300,000). This is to ensure students have sufficient funds to cover their total cost at UQ and complete the programme.
