Professor Jianliang Xu and Dr. Xin Huang, Professor and Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science respectively, PhD student Jinbin Huang and Dr. Yuanyuan Zhu from School of Computer, Wuhan University, received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper “Parameter-free Structural Diversity Search“ at the 20th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE 2019).

The award-winning paper proposes a parameter-free structural diversity model in online social networks. Informed by existing studies that a user with higher structural diversity tends to have a higher probability to be affected during the social contagion process, structural diversity search has broad applications in different fields such as political campaigns and promotion of health practices. This work proposes novel concepts of discriminative cores and applies h-index to address the limitations of existing models (e.g., t-sized components, t-core, t-brace) caused by the input parameter t. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithms.

The International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE) is one of the leading international conferences which aims at high quality research and offers the ground for advancing efforts in topics related to Web information systems. The WISE 2019 conference received a total of 211 submissions, and 50 submissions were selected as regular papers (an acceptance rate of 23.7%). Only one paper was selected for the Best Paper Award.
