Dr. Xin Huang Receives President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Young Researcher

Dr. Huang Xin, Assistant Professor of Department of Computer Science, was awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Young Researcher 2020-21. The President's Award Selection Committee acknowledges Dr. Huang as an outstanding scholar on account of his excellent engagement in research.

Dr. Huang has an impressive research portfolio, his main research interests include graph data management, graph mining and visualization, social network analysis, and privacy-aware computing.

Dr. Huang has published a monograph, edited two books, and refereed 24 conference publications, four demo and workshop publications, 18 journal publications, and two journal editorials. He has co-edited more than 40 papers in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals or conferences. The strong impact of his research and publications is evidenced by his more than 1,000 citations and Google H-index of 16.

Dr. Huang is very active in the international research community and in providing professional services. He has been invited to serve on more than 50 international conference program committees, to be a peer reviewer for high-impact journals and to be guest editor for three peer-reviewed journals. He has given two tutorials at international conferences in 2017 and 2018, on the graph data management techniques of community search and graph matching. He has chaired seven international conferences or workshops.

Because of his high-impact pioneer work on community search, Dr. Huang was invited to write a first-author monograph, titled Community Search over Big Graphs, which was published in the Synthesis Lectures on Data Management by Morgan & Claypool. In addition, his scholarly work won the Best Paper Award at the 20th International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering (WISE 2019), a reputable international conference, and the Best Student Paper Award at the 11th IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing (ICSC 2017), as well as a Best Paper Nomination at the 29th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM 2020). He received the Research Grants Council (RGC) Early Career Award in 2020 in recognition of his excellent research achievements.

Since joining the University in 2016, Dr. Huang has secured external competitive research grants in the capacity of principal investigator, including two Research Grants Council (RGC) grants and one National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grant.

Dr. Huang also conducts interdisciplinary research with colleagues in the biology and journalism disciplines, funded by the University’s interdisciplinary grants. Their research findings have been published in interdisciplinary journals. He has also made an important contribution to teaching and supervision, resulting in five awards for his students at HKBU. Dr. Huang is an excellent young researcher in the field of data science, producing high-impact research. He has a solid record of achievement in securing external grants for his research, and he has actively participated in and served the international research community. Hence the Selection Committee has no hesitation in recommending Dr. Huang for the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance as Young Researcher.
