Dr. Li Chen, Associate Professor, Dr. Yucheng Jin, Research Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and PhD student Wanling Cai received the Honorable Mention Award for their co-authored paper “Impacts of Personal Characteristics on User Trust in Conversational Recommender Systems” at the 2022 ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2022). This is the premier international conference on Human-Computer Interaction.

The award-winning paper has aimed to investigate how user characteristics and system conversation design factors affect user trust in conversational recommender systems, which will be useful for optimising the design of conversational recommender systems to be more trustworthy for individual users. In this work, they investigated the effects of the three types of factors (user-related, system-related and context-related) on user trust in two types of conversational recommender systems, i.e., user-initiative and mixed-initiative. Their online user study demonstrated the main effects of user-related factors (personal characteristics like trust propensity and domain knowledge) and their interaction effects with the system-related factor (initiative strategy) and the context-related factor (task complexity) on user trust in conversational recommender systems.

CHI has been held annually since 1982 and attracts thousands of international attendees. It brings together researchers and practitioners from all over the world, from all segments of the Computer-Human Interaction community -- design, education, engineering, management, research, and usability, and from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and positionalities, who have an overarching goal to make the world a better place with interactive digital technologies. CHI 2022 is structured as a Hybrid-Onsite full conference from April 30–May 5 in New Orleans, LA. The conference received 2,579 submissions which were rigorously reviewed, resulting in 637 accepted papers at a 24.7% acceptance rate. The SIGCHI “Best of CHI” awards honour exceptional submissions to SIGCHI sponsored conferences. A total of 25 Papers received a Best Paper award (top 1% of submissions), 103 papers received Honorable Mention (remaining top 5% of submissions).
