Three Computer Science Research Projects Secure Guangdong Natural Science Fund 2024
22 Aug 2024
The Department is pleased to announce that three of our Assistant Professors, Drs. Bo Han, Yang Liu and Renjie Wan secured the Guangdong Natural Science Fund under the Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation – General Programme 2024. The award-winning projects encompass innovative topics across data analytics, machine learning, and epidemiology.
Dr. Bo Han's project, titled “Trustworthy Graph Representation Learning (TGRL) under Out-of-distribution Data” (分佈外數據下的可信圖表徵學習研究), aims to explore new directions in TGRL with applications in advanced artificial intelligence language models, drug discovery, and social networks, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of graph-based data processing and analysis.
Dr. Yang Liu's research project, titled “Epidemiology-Driven Machine Learning Model for Infectious Disease Risk Prediction” (基於流行病學知識嵌入的機器學習模型及其在傳染病傳播風險預測中的應用), focuses on developing cutting-edge machine learning models that leverage epidemiological knowledge to improve the prediction of disease transmission risk, enabling effective disease control through optimal resource allocation.
Dr. Renjie Wan’s research work, titled “Occlusion Removal in Dynamic 3D Environments” (三維動態空間中的視覺障礙物去除技術研究), addresses the challenges posed by visual interference on the operation of intelligent devices. Unlike traditional methodologies that tackle static occlusions with image and video-based approaches, his research employs a novel approach that projects 2D information into a 3D space, effectively removing obstacles in dynamic environments.
Reflecting on this remarkable achievement, Professor Jianliang Xu, the Head of the Department of Computer Science, expressed, "The awards recognise the exceptional work of our outstanding researchers and underscores the Department's pivotal role in driving research excellence." He added, "Our talented team will forge ahead, committed to exploring groundbreaking technological advancements."
The Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation–General Programme 2024, funded by the Guangdong Natural Science Fund of the Guangdong Department of Science and Technology, aims to nurture and support researchers, especially young talents from Hong Kong and Macau, in conducting basic research to promote the balanced, coordinated, and sustainable development of all disciplines, facilitating the development of Greater Bay Area (GBA) as an innovative hub.
