Dr. Kristen Li Honours with Prestigious 2024 UGC Teaching Award

Dr. Kristen Li, Lecturer of the Department, has been awarded the prestigious University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award in the General Faculty Members category on 7 October 2024. This landmark achievement not only recognises her exceptional efforts in nurturing young innovators with creative approaches but also highlights the Department’s commitment to teaching and learning excellence.

As an innovative educator, Dr. Li has garnered recognition for her distinctive teaching methods, which effectively integrate advanced technologies with robust educational design. Her unique 5D design framework - Discover, Define, Develop, Debate, and Deliver - places students at the centre of education, fostering creativity and critical thinking skills. The success of her teaching methods is evident in students' academic achievements as they excel in the global hackathon series, tackling sustainability issues and earning international recognition. Remarkably, Dr. Li has redefined the senior-level General Education course, evolving it into a comprehensive transdisciplinary capstone experience.

Professor Jianliang Xu, Head and Chair Professor of the Department, expressed his pride in Dr. Li’s achievement, stating, “We are immensely proud of Dr. Li’s recognition. Introduced in 2011, the annual UGC Teaching Award aims to honour those who excel in teaching in the UGC sector. The Award not only recognises the teachers’ past and present teaching performance and achievements but also their leadership in scholarly contributions to teaching and learning within and across universities.
