Professor Jianliang Xu, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science, has been elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for the class of 2025. This prestigious recognition honours his extraordinary contributions to mobile data management and trustworthy query processing.

Since joining the Department in 2002, Professor Xu has made remarkable advancements in areas such as big data, database, blockchain, applied artificial intelligence, and data security and privacy. His academic impact is underscored by an H-index of 63 and over 13,000 citations, with his research widely recognised and adopted by governments and industry leaders.

In addition to his research, Professor Xu has been instrumental in the IEEE community, serving as General Chair or Technical Program Chair for over ten conferences and workshops, as well as an Associate Editor for several IEEE Transactions.

In response to his election, Professor Xu expressed his gratitude, stating, “Being elevated to IEEE Fellow is a tremendous honour that reflects the support of many. I am grateful to my students, collaborators, colleagues, and especially to Professor Jiming Liu, whose guidance has been invaluable. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative spirit of our Department.”

The IEEE is the world’s leading technical professional organisation dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The grade of Fellow is awarded to individuals with an outstanding record of accomplishments across IEEE's fields of interest, representing the highest membership grade and a significant career milestone. Each year, fewer than 0.1% of the total voting IEEE membership is elevated to Fellow status, highlighting the honour's exclusivity.
