Professor Xin Huang Receives the Faculty Performance Award in Scholarly Work

We are proud to share that four faculty members from the Department, Dr. Jacky Chan, Dr. Martin Choy, Professor Xin Huang, and Professor Byron Choi, have been recognised at the Awards Presentation for Outstanding Performance 2026 for their dedicated contributions to teaching, research, service, and commitment to leveraging technology for social good.

Dr. Jacky Chan: A Collaborative Effort in Transdisciplinary Teaching

Dr. Chan, together with Professor Peter Nelson (Academy of Visual Arts), Dr. Dimple R. Thadani (Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems), and Professor Lola Xie (Department of Communication Studies), received the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Team Teaching.

Their collaborative General Education course “Critical AI Literacies: Embracing AI for Social Good” integrates expertise from computer science, visual arts, business, and communication. Through a flipped classroom model, hands-on labs, and a “create, critique, and refine” methodology, the team empowers students to become responsible co-creators in the AI era. Their pedagogical innovation has also earned them an invitation to host a pre-conference workshop at the upcoming GenAI and Pedagogical Innovations (GaPI) in Higher Education International Conference.

Dr. Martin Choy: Advancing Student-Centred Learning

Dr. Choy, recipient of the Faculty Performance Award in Teaching (Individual), is deeply committed to mentoring students through service-learning and metaverse-based e-Learning initiatives. For Dr. Choy, the greatest reward is witnessing his students excel on the global stage. He is especially proud of supporting the team that triumphed at an AI Hackathon in San Francisco, demonstrating what students can achieve with the right environment and guidance.

Professor Xin Huang: Driving Excellence in Data Science Research

Professor Huang received the Faculty Performance Award in Scholarly Work for his outstanding contributions to data science and large-scale graph management. With over 100 publications, seven external grants, and accolades such as AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar and World’s Top 2% Highly Cited Scientist, Professor Huang exemplifies research excellence and global impact.

Professor Byron Choi: Commitment to Service and Academic Innovation

Professor Choi was honoured with the Faculty Performance Award in Service for his sustained contributions to the University and the wider community. His leadership in curriculum development, accreditation, and AI education initiatives, including the Second Major in AI & Data Science and AI x HK OpenCups has significantly advanced HKBU’s academic mission and outreach.
