Computer Science Researchers Secure HK$9M in RGC Funding and Awarded Projects Doubled

The Department of Computer Science has secured around HK$9 million in research funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC) for the 2026/27 funding cycle. Out of 329 university-wide submissions, HKBU received 95 awarded projects, with the Department garnering 10 of them, comprising nine General Research Fund (GRF) grants and one Early Career Scheme (ECS). This achievement doubles the Department's project count from last year and marks a stellar 95% increase in total funding.

"This outstanding accomplishment is a direct result of the exceptional efforts and dedication of our faculty,” remarked Professor Jianliang Xu, Head of the Department. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the award recipients and deep gratitude to the entire department team for their collaborative work in submitting such high-quality proposals."

Looking ahead, Professor Xu affirmed, "Building on this strong foundation, the Department will continue to pioneer impactful multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects. Our goal is to translate our academic excellence into real-world solutions that extend well beyond the university sphere."

The GRF and ECS are competitive peer-reviewed research funding schemes administered by the RGC. The GRF supports researchers who have demonstrated or have the potential for research excellence, while the ECS aims to nurture junior academics and prepare them for a career in education and research.
