Professor Yiu-ming Cheung, Professor of the Department of Computer Science, and PhD student Fangqing Gu, won a Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper “A Direct Search Algorithm based on Kernel Density Estimator for Nonlinear Optimization” at the Joint Conferences of The 10th International Conference on Natural Computation and The 11th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, recently concluded in Xiamen, China. Their work was one of the two Best Papers from the over 1,100 submissions in the conference.

The award-winning paper proposes a direct search algorithm based on kernel density estimator for the nonlinear optimization problems. The authors not only theoretically show that the search direction, which is used in the proposed algorithm towards maximizing the objective function, is the ascent direction of the objective function, but also empirically investigate the effectiveness of the search direction. Optimization problems have been widely applied in many fields, such as resource scheduler in economy, network planning in engineering and so on. Many of these problems are non-differential and the proposed algorithm gives a good choice to deal with them.

The 3-day conference is a premier international forum for scientists and researchers to present the state of the art of data mining and intelligent methods inspired from nature, particularly biological, linguistic, and physical systems, with applications to computers, circuits, systems, control, communications, and more. This is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary area in which a wide range of theory and methodologies are being investigated and developed to tackle complex and challenging problems.
