HK$6.2 Million Grant for Innovative Project

1 Jan 2006

The Department and its collaborators have received a grant of HK$6.2 million from the Innovation and Technology Fund for an innovative research project on mobile location service. Working in collaboration will be HKBU, the Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association, Hong Kong Productivity Council and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. The project has also been promised an $800,000 sponsorship by several telecommunications practitioners. "The project aims to develop an accurate, low-cost Mobile Location Estimate System for fleet management applications using existing mobile phone infrastructure, which is a breakthrough to the existing barrier between the trade-off of cost and performance in fleet management systems," said Dr. Joseph Ng, Associate Professor of the Computer Science Department and a Co-Principal Investigator. This system should benefit logistics and transport, education, tourism and the general-user sectors.
