HKBU’s Department of Computer Science and Kyoto University, Japan, jointly organised a workshop entitled Design for Sustainability: Mobility and Healthcare from 12 to 15 June 2014. Postgraduate students who participated in the workshop utilised novel technologies and concepts to creatively design new ways of living in a sustainable community in the future.
Thirty-three postgraduate students and faculty members from HKBU and Kyoto University formed five teams, each of which worked to develop solutions to given challenges to Lantau Island’s development. The group which won the Best Presentation Award adopted a fieldwork approach to systematically uncover the needs of Lantau Island. They visited the island and certain districts of Hong Kong, and summarised the characteristics of the two areas respectively. Based on these findings, the team came up with suggestions to conserve the culture of Lantau Island, such as building a theme park with the characteristics of Tai O fishing village, and introducing an e-market as a more convenient option for residents.
Professor Toru Ishida, one of the workshop's Co-Chairs, hoped that the students from different countries and academic backgrounds could experience the difficulties and enjoy the fun of integrating different ideas and in doing so could contribute more innovative ideas to the community. Other guests and judging panels who attended the workshop included Professor Walter Gander of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Professor Sankar Pal of the Indian Statistical Institution, and Professor Yuen Ping-chi, Head of the Department of Computer Science of HKBU.
This is the third year of collaboration between HKBU and Kyoto University, with the aim of promoting academic exchange and quality research in a wide spectrum of academic areas.
