The 20th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (IEEE MDM 2019) was held at HKBU from 10 to 13 June by IEEE. The conference this year is hosted by Department of Computer Science (COMP) of Hong Kong Baptist University. Around 180 researchers and developers from academia and industry worldwide were attracted. Prof. Jiming Liu and Prof. Jianliang Xu from COMP were the Honorary Chair and Programme Committee Co-chair respectively.

Since its debut in 1999, the MDM series of conferences has established itself as a prestigious forum for the exchange of innovative and significant research results in mobile data management. The conference provided unique opportunities to bring researchers, engineers, and practitioners together to explore new ideas, techniques, tools, and exchange experiences.

A keynote session was scheduled every morning and respectively delivered by Prof. Walid G. Aref of Purdue University, Prof. Xiaofang Zhou of The University of Queensland and Dr. Xing Xie, Microsoft Research Asia. The keynote speeches were on “The Dos and Don’ts of Spatial+X Data Management: A “Systems Perspective””, “New Advances in Spatial Trajectory Analytics” and “Future of Personalized Recommendation Systems”.

Other research sessions and panel discussions addressed topics such as Localization, Data Mining, Road Networks, Queries, Planning & Analysis, Transport and Urban Analytics as well as AI & Industry. A total of 106 papers were presented.

IEEE MDM 2019 first established MDM 20-Year Influential Paper Award this year and it was awarded to Prof. Philippe Bonnet, IT University of Copenhagen, recognizing the profound influence of his research. His paper as first author, “Towards Sensor Database Systems”, has been cited 1113 times.

Apart from MDM 20-Year Influential Paper Award, Early Career Distinguished Lecture Series was also newly established to recognize the scholars graduated from PhD within 10 years. Prof. Guoliang Li, Tsinghua University, Dr. Mohamed Sarwat, Arizona State University and Prof. Bin Yang, Aalborg University, were invited as Early Career Distinguished Lecturers and shared their experience with delegates.

In addition, six international workshops were co-located with the IEEE MDM 2019, which were the International Workshop on ALgorithms for Indoor Architectures and Systems (ALIAS 2019), the International Workshop on Blockchain and Mobile Applications (BlockApp 2019), the International Workshop on Machine Learning and Data Quality for Mobile Data Management (MLDQ 2019), the International Workshop on Mobile Data Management, Mining, and Computing on Social Networks (MobiSocial 2019), the International Workshop on Mobile Ubiquitous Systems and Technologies (MUST 2019) and International Workshop on Mobility Data Analytics for Smart Cities (MDASC 2019).

The conferences were sponsored by the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University, The IEEE Computer Society, The IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering and The Croucher Foundation.
