Yumi Luo, a final-year Computer Science student at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), has teamed up with Bianca Lam, a third-year Data Science student at City University of Hong Kong, co-developed an innovative mobile app that helps Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) candidates make smarter, more informed choices during the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) application period.

The app “DSE JUPAS Ultimate Calculator” leverages artificial intelligence to analyse DSE results and assess admission prospects across local university programmes. With a clean, user-friendly interface and features such as a score calculator, personalised programme recommendations, up-to-date institution information, and admission planning tools, the app offers DSE candidates clear guidance and practical support throughout the application process.

Yumi and Bianca’s partnership began during the STEM Internship Scheme organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission, where they met while interning at Zoomob Limited. Combining their expertise and hands-on experience, they developed the “DSE JUPAS Ultimate Calculator” from concept to launch.

Reflecting on the experience, Yumi said, “Developing this app has been invaluable. The STEM Internship Scheme gave me essential real-world exposure and mentorship, which directly shaped our approach and accelerated our progress from concept to launch. Leveraging AI and Vibe Coding’s flexible development platform, we tackled real pain points for DSE students and delivered a solution that helps them take charge of their academic journeys.”

Dr. Kevin Wang, Yumi’s Final Year Project Supervisor in the Department of Computer Science at HKBU, commented: "Yumi’s ability to apply technical knowledge and creativity to real-world challenges is truly impressive. DSE JUPAS Ultimate Calculator is a compelling example of student innovation driving practical benefits for the community. This project highlights how collaboration and cross-disciplinary teamwork can have a lasting impact."

The app is now available for download on iOS and Android.
