Learning Beyond the Classroom: Study Abroad Programme at McGill University

Two final-year Computer Science undergraduates, Jiayu Wang and Yuchen Wu embarked on a transformative study abroad experience at the prestigious McGill University in Canada. Encompassing academic rigour, cultural immersion, and personal growth, their journeys highlight the Department’s commitment to global learning opportunities.

Academic Excellence: From User to Creator

Jiayu immersed herself in McGill’s School of Computer Science, enrolling in Fundamentals of Computer Graphics under the guidance of Professor Paul Kry.

Before the exchange, her 3D graphics experience was limited to using tools such as Blender. At McGill, she made a significant leap by transitioning from being a “user” to a “creator,” delving into the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of visual computing. She tackled complex topics, including projection, hidden surface removal, and lighting simulation, ultimately building a rendering engine from scratch.

She shared: “Writing code that translated into realistic visual phenomena was incredibly rewarding. This course sharpened my programming skills and deepened my appreciation of the theoretical rigour behind computer science.”

Research-Oriented Learning: A Broader Perspective

Yuchen embraced McGill’s research-driven academic culture, where courses emphasised independent reading, critical thinking, and active participation. This environment pushed him to adopt a more proactive approach to learning.

Through natural language processing coursework and collaboration with peers from diverse backgrounds, he gained valuable exposure to international research practices and broadened his academic perspective. Beyond the classroom, the challenges of independent living, arranging accommodation, managing budgets, and navigating new systems further built his resilience and problem-solving abilities.

Yuchen added, “Living and studying abroad taught me how to adapt quickly and take ownership of my learning. The experience has profoundly influenced how I approach challenges, both academic and personal.”

A Defining Chapter

From intense lectures in the Trottier Building to unforgettable weekend escapes amid the stunning peaks of Banff, both students returned with advanced technical knowledge, a truly global mindset, and cherished memories. Their journeys exemplify the Department’s dedication to nurturing graduates who are not only technically strong but also culturally adaptable and resilient in diverse environments.
