Abstract
Shape detection can be used as a first step in image understanding since it is one of the main ways humans recognize objects. By identifying simple shapes within object, we can better understand what we are looking at. This has applications in other areas such as image retrieval. Fast, accurate shape detectors are discussed here, as well as their application to biometrics. Iris detection is an example of where basic shapes are evident (circles, ellipses). Fingerprint comparison is also discussed via a triangle comparison method based on Voronoi diagrams. Vocabulary decomposition for mobile visual search will also be discussed.
