Abstract
Low-rank modeling generally refers to a class of methods that solves problems by representing variables of interest as low-rank matrices. It has achieved great success in various fields including computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, and bioinformatics. In this talk, I will present theories and optimization algorithms for solving the problems of matrix completion and sparse plus low-rank decomposition, as well as their applications in image analysis.

Biography
Jianfeng Cai is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Iowa since 2011. Before that he was a CAM assistant adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematics of UCLA (2009-2011) and a research scientist in Temasek Labs of National University of Singapore (2007-2009). He obtained his PhD in mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. His main area of research is computational harmonic analysis with applications in imaging sciences and related inverse problems.
