Abstract
In step with the rapid development of location-based services (LBS), massive amount of data that contains both text information and geographical information are being generated at an unprecedented scale (e.g., geo-tagged tweets from Twitter, check-in data from Foursquare). This development enables location-aware publish/subscribe that disseminates geo-textual messages to a vast number of subscription users. In addition, it implies an increasing demand for the functionality of subscription queries that supports text-based intent, location-based intent, and time-based intent. A subscription query in location-based publish/subscribe systems takes user-supplied location and keywords data as arguments and continuously receives geo-textual messages that are spatially, textually, and temporally relevant to these arguments. The talk covers the ideas and concepts underlying different types of subscription query functionality; it outlines challenges and solutions for processing a large number of subscription queries over geo-textual data streams; and it presents new challenges yet to be addressed.
