Abstract
With the proliferation of geo-positioning techniques and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, the web is increasingly being used by mobile users and accurate user positioning is increasingly available. As a result, a spatial, or geographical web is emerging where both contents and users are associated with locations. This makes massive amounts of objects available on the web that possess both a geographical location and a textual description. Such spatial and textual data objects include stores, tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, businesses, entertainment services, etc. This talk will generally introduce some techniques of spatial and textual data management, including data indexing, querying, and mining.

Biography
Dr. Xin Cao is currently a lecturer in School of Computer Science and Engineering at University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia. During 2014 to 2016 he worked as a lecturer in the Knowledge and Data Engineering research cluster at Queen's University Belfast (QUB) in UK. He received his PhD degree in computer science and engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 2014. Prior to pursuing the PhD, he worked as a scientific assistant in the Center for Data-Intensive Systems (Daisy) at Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark for two years. He received his B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in computer science and technology from Zhejiang University, China. His research interests include data management (in particular on spatial, temporal, and textual data), databases, information retrieval, and data mining. Most of his work was published in premier database conferences and journals, including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, and TODS, etc. He is on the reviewer board of several top tier database journals, such as TODS, VLDBJ, and TKDE.
