Abstract
Differential privacy (DP) has been increasingly accepted as the de facto standard for data privacy in the research community. In this talk we explore the potential and limitations of DP from two aspects. First, we will explore the meaning of DP, trying to answer the question: “Under what condition(s), the notion of DP delivers the promised privacy guarantee?” We show that the answer is quite nuanced and depends on legal and ethical considerations that need to be discussed by the community. Second, we will survey the existing techniques for achieving DP, and explore what kind of data analysis tasks can be performed accurately while satisfying DP, and what kinds of data analysis remain difficult.
