An experiment which suggests that textual summarisation of neonatal ICU data leads to better decision making than graphical presentation will be described. The BabyTalk project has the aim of generating such texts automatically and the progress that have been made over the fist six months will be discussed. TSNet - a distributed system which allows groups in different countries to share complex time series data and processing algorithms will also be described.

Jim Hunter is originally from Stirling in central Scotland. He did a BSc in Physics at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a PhD in Space Physics at University of Sussex. In 1976 he was appointed to a lectureship at Sussex and in 1988 moved to the University of Aberdeen as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing Science. In 2001 he was appointed to a personal chair. His research interests are in the area of Artificial Intelligence applied to Medicine, and in particular to the interpretation of complex time series data which are available in Intensive Care Units.
