Abstract
In this talk, we will review the recent development of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, and related applications. We will first provide an overview of RFID fundamentals, including what RFID is and how RFID works. Then, we will introduce a variety of RFID developments, including that RFID mandates by the U.S. Department of Defense, Federal Drug Administration and major retailers have spotlighted the potential of this technology to optimize how assets are tracked and managed throughout the global supply chain. We will also discuss how RFID technology has been playing an increasing role in supply chain security, from E-Seals being used on containerized cargo to the authentication of healthcare products from their sources to their destinations, as well as to help ensure the integrity of shipments and to prevent the global supply chain from being used as an instrument of terror, which is of critical interest to all businesses and government officials. In the last but not the least, we will introduce the RFID technology from the industry RFID leading company, IBM, and discuss how IBM's RFID technology can help industry to achieve their business goal. In addition, we will introduce IBM's university program, under which several universities have been interested in working with IBM to develop RFID technologies.
