A vast gap exists between the way humans and machines perceive visual objects. Consequently, many of the algorithms designed for matching low-level features fail to make a significant impact on production visual information systems. It is widely acknowledged that the automatic object recognition problem is unlikely to be solved within the short to medium term. Such limitations in high-level object recognition in images and other forms of visual data necessitate the use of a combination of paradigms in searching visual information. In this talk, the problem of searching visual information is addressed and some solutions are discussed. In addition, a new database benchmark established under the auspices of the International Association for Pattern Recognition for calibrating and evaluating visual information search performance will be presented.

Prior to taking up his present Foundation Chair in Computer Science at Victoria University, Australia, Clement Leung held an Established Chair in Computer Science at the University of London. His publications include two books and well over one hundred research articles. He is acknowledged by the international research community to be a pioneer in the field of Visual Information Systems, and has published the first book on the subject. His services to the research community include serving as Program Chair, Program Co-Chair, Keynote Speaker, Panel Expert, and on the Program Committee and Steering Committee of major International Conferences and Workshops in US, Europe, Australia, and Asia. In addition to contributing to the Editorship of a number of international journals, he has also served as the Chairman of Technical Committee 12 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, as well as on the Standards Australia Committee on Coded Representation of Picture, Audio, and Multimedia/Hypermedia Information, and he played an active role in shaping the influential MPEG-7 International Standard. He is listed in Who's Who in Australia, Who's Who in the World, Great Minds of the 21st Century, Dictionary of International Biography, and Who's Who in Australasia & Pacific Nations. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and a Chartered Engineer.
