Abstract
The validation-based scheme is widely used to keep replicated data up-to-date in the Internet. This approach ensures that the data retrieved from the replicas are never outdated by over a designated time period with respect to the authoritative origin data. It is therefore known as approximate data replication. In this talk, we discuss two issues under validation-based approximate data replication. We consider two classes of service models: replica-aware services and replica-blind services. In replica-aware services, the servers are aware of the locations of replicas and can therefore optimize request routing to improve performance. We study the routing optimization among replicas to cut down validation cost. In replica-blind services, the servers are not aware of the locations of replicas or even their existence. Thus, each replica only serves the requests flowing through it under a given routing strategy. We investigate the placement of replicas to reduce access and validation costs.
