FoodBites Project Receives Merit Award at Samsung Solve for Tomorrow

FoodBites, a project developed by our Computer Science undergraduates Bhawish Kumar, Bibinur Adikhan, Habibul Bashar and Ayman Jashim, has received a Merit Award (Tertiary Category) at the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition.

Addressing Local Challenges Through Technology

Developed with a mission to address a striking imbalance in Hong Kong’s food system, FoodBites seeks to tackle the dual challenge of daily edible food waste and community food insecurity. Through their research, the team identified that the core issue lies not in a lack of resources, but in fragmented, manual redistribution processes that often fail during time-sensitive situations. To address this issue, they developed a data-driven digital platform to help connect donors, NGOs, and volunteers in real-time.

By showcasing a functional prototype, the project demonstrates how technology can transform food redistribution into a transparent and sustainable system. The judges commended the initiative for its technical scalability and its alignment with this year's theme of Environmental Sustainability via Technology.

Collaborative Effort

The team extends their heartfelt thanks to the HKBU Coding Club for fostering a collaborative environment, and to the Department for its continuous encouragement and guidance. The team’s achievement reflects the Department’s commitment to cultivating innovative mindsets and a sense of compassion, empowering them to use their technological know-how for the benefit of society.

About the Competition

First launched in the U.S. in 2010 and now active in 68 regions, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow empowers young innovators to use STEM skills to solve pressing social issues. Environmental Sustainability via Technology, one of the topics this year, encouraged participants to explore how AI and other innovations can build a greener future.
