DAAI Student Wins Triple Honours for AI Innovation

Jason Chan Pak-lam, a MSc in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (DAAI) student and a practising Medical Laboratory Technologist, has clinched three awards for his project, the Apex Intelligent Management System (AIMS).

Designed to modernise laboratory operations, AIMS leverages artificial intelligence to integrate workflows, instrument monitoring, and inventory management into a unified, fully paperless platform. In line with Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 and the Hospital Authority’s “Green Office” and “Go Paperless” directives, AIMS enhances operational efficiency while reducing paper use and resource consumption, actively contributing to the city’s sustainability agenda.

His project has been recognised with the Industry Excellence Star Award from the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, the Outstanding Award in Creativity – Hospital Authority, where he was the sole recipient across the entire organisation, and the Outstanding Award in Creativity – Hong Kong Island Cluster (West).

“As someone working behind the scenes in both healthcare and technology, I hope my project demonstrates that knowledge gained in the classroom can deliver real, meaningful impact in everyday professional practice,” Jason shared.

He also attributed his success to the Department’s strong emphasis on both theoretical foundation and practical application for enabling him to tackle real-world healthcare challenges with cutting-edge AI. He also expressed gratitude to the professors and lecturers for their continuous encouragement and support.
