PhD Student Carrie Wu wins Best Student Paper Award in UMAP 2015

Jointly work with Dr. Li Chen, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, PhD student Carrie Wu won ‘The James Chen Best Student Paper Award’ in the 23rd Conference on User Modelling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP 2015) based on their work entitled “Implicit Acquisition of User Personality for Augmenting Movie Recommendations”.

UMAP 2015, the premier international conference in the areas of user modeling, adaptation and personalization, was concluded in Dublin, Ireland on 3 July 2015. Standing out from other 112 submissions, Carrie’s paper won this recognizing award. “I have learnt more in tackling practical problems from users’ perspective,” Carrie shared.

The award-winning paper presented an approach to derive users’ personality implicitly from their behavior in movie domain, and to further use the derived personality to augment online movie recommendations. Their research output indicates an effective solution to infer users’ personality and realize personality-based recommender systems in an online environment.
