2012 Student Project Competition

Both the 9th Final Year Project (FYP) Competition and 6th Postgraduate Paper Contest organized by the IEEE (HK) Computational Intelligence Chapter have been recently concluded.
This year, we have received several entries from different universities in Hong Kong, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the City University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Each submitted project/paper went through a review process by our panel consisting of experts in the area of computational intelligence.
Finally, the following papers/projects were shortlisted, and then presented in the ceremony, which was held on August 25, 2012. As a result, the competition results are as follows:

Postgraduate Paper Contest:

1. Champion: “Viral Marketing for Dedicated Customers”, Student: Cheng LONG (HKUST), Supervisor: Raymond Wong
2. First Runner-up: “Efficient Image/Video Retexturing Using Parallel Bilateral Grids”, Student: Ping LI (CUHK), Supervisor: Hanqiu SUN
3. Second Runner-up: “Trace Ratio Optimization based Semi-Supervised Multimodal Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction for Marginal Manifold Visualization”, Students: Zhao (Jared) ZHANG and Mingbo ZHAO (CityU), Supervisor: Tommy W. S. Chow

FYP Competition:

1. Champion: “A Comprehensive Study of Histograms of Oriented Gradients and Color Histogram Distance in Pedestrian Detection”, Students: Bing XU and Ding LIU (CUHK), Supervisor: Sean Xiaoou Tang
2. First Runner-up: “Data Mining for Business Applications”, Students: Ka Man, CHAN, Ka Wing, HO, Pui Yan, KWAN and Wai Ming, LAM (HKUST), Supervisor: Raymond Wong
3. Second Runner-up: “Xbox Kinect Presenter”, Students: Andy Yat Tin, LAU and Kin Wing, LAU (CUHK), Supervisor: Jiaya Jia
