Background
  • The Nvidia-HKBU Joint PhD Fellowship Scheme aims to foster collaboration between Nvidia, a leading technology company specializing in graphics processing units (GPUs), and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), a prestigious academic institution. The scheme offers financial support and research opportunities for outstanding doctoral students pursuing research in areas related to graphics processing, artificial intelligence, and computer science.
  • The Computer Science Department of HKBU has established research excellence with an international reputation in four selected areas, namely Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics and Management, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, and Distributed Systems and Networking. Currently, the Department has over 26 academic staff members, including 1 ACM Fellow, 4 IEEE Fellows, and 9 top 2% scholars by Stanford University. All of the faculty members have Ph.D. degrees awarded by renowned universities in US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, UK, and Hong Kong.

Objective

  • The primary objective of the Nvidia-HKBU Joint PhD Fellowship Scheme is to promote cutting-edge research in the field of graphics processing and artificial intelligence. By supporting exceptional PhD students, the scheme aims to facilitate innovative research projects and nurture future talent in these domains. This scheme is open to both local and international applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants with research interests aligned with the focus areas of Nvidia, such as graphics processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or computer vision, are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants should possess a strong academic track record, demonstrated through excellent undergraduate and/or postgraduate results, from either a local university or a well-recognized non-local institution (the latter refers to those that are among the top 100 institutions for related subjects in the latest publication of world university ranking tables, e.g., QS, ARWU, THE, etc.).
  • Candidates must have good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • For applicants from non-English speaking universities, unless they provide proof that English is the language of instruction, they are required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 79 (Internet-based Test) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Financial Support: The scheme provides a competitive fellowship package. The maximum monthly scholarship is HK$20,000 for students with a bachelor degree, and HK$23,000 for those with a master degree, plus financial support for carrying out research-related activities such as attending overseas conferences.

Application Process

  • Application Deadline: 31 October 2023
  • Submission of Applications: Applications should be submitted online via the online application system.
  • Selection Process: A selection committee comprising representatives from HKBU and Nvidia will evaluate the applications based on academic excellence, research potential, alignment with Nvidia's focus areas, and suitability for collaborative research.
  • Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, either in person or via video conferencing, to assess their research aptitude and interpersonal skills.
  • Fellowship Offer: Successful candidates will receive a formal offer letter outlining the fellowship package, research expectations, and any specific terms and conditions.
  • Fellowship Acceptance: Fellows are required to accept the offer and enroll as PhD students at HKBU, adhering to the guidelines and regulations of the university and the fellowship scheme.

Research Expectations

  • Fellows are expected to conduct original research in their chosen field under the guidance of their HKBU supervisor and with support from Nvidia.
  • Fellows should actively participate in research activities, including attending seminars, conferences, and workshops relevant to their research area.
  • Fellows can take internships in Nvidia for up to one year for conducting joint research projects.
  • Fellows are expected to publish their research findings in reputable academic journals and conferences, in collaboration with Nvidia researchers.
  • Regular progress reports and presentations will be required to ensure the smooth monitoring of research progress.
  • Fellows are required to satisfy the University-wide Research postgraduate programme graduation requirements.


Duration

  • The Nvidia-HKBU Joint PhD Fellowship Scheme supports fellows for a period of up to four years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the scheme's guidelines.

Evaluation and Review

  • The progress and performance of fellows will be regularly reviewed by a joint committee consisting of representatives from HKBU and Nvidia. The committee will assess research output, engagement in collaborative activities, and adherence to the fellowship's terms and conditions.
