“Father of Pascal” shares “Computers and Computing in the Early Years” at Distinguished Lecture Series

To strengthen both the University community and public’s interest and understanding of the discipline of computer science, the public lecture in the Distinguished Lecture Series organized by the Department of Computer Science was held on 23 January, with 1984 Turing Award Laureate Professor Niklaus Wirth sharing his experience and insights on the topic “Computers and Computing in the Early Years”. The lecture attracted a full house of about 120 participants, including teachers and students from local tertiary institutions and secondary schools, members of the HKBU community, and the general public. The lecture was well received and stimulated an active discussion with the audience.

In his lecture, Professor Wirth shared his views in three parts: firstly, in terms of hardware and software, he elaborated the computer and computing development of the early years, starting from 1960s. Secondly, he illustrated the evolution of computers in recent years with regard to computer capability and connectivity brings by the Internet. Last but not least, Professor remarked the expansion of applications and growth of demands challenge the programming engineers beyond limits to keep up the quality in software design.

The Distinguished Lecture Series was sponsored by Doctor Chiu Chun-bong, DBA (Hon), MBE, JP, Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation. In the same evening, the University hosted a VIP dinner in honour of Professor Wirth and Doctor Chiu. Representatives of the University also participated the dinner.
