In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) has found wide spread applications in health care, surveillance, manufacturing, industrial automation, agriculture; smart city life through efficient management of traffic, pollution, waste, energy, and water. Such cyber physical systems generate huge amount of data of diverse nature such as numbers, text, audio, video, and image, which can be structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. Processing such data to arrive at meaningful inferences needs huge amount of computing power. Instead of establishing expensive high performance computing facility, a cloud environment can be effectively used to carry out parallel and distributed computing across the network. We present a synthesizing overview of the trends and challenges in handling such computations.
Prof. L.M. Patnaik obtained his Ph.D in 1978 in the area of Real-Time Systems, D.Sc. in 1989 in the areas of Computer Systems and Architectures, both from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. During March 2008 – August 2011, he was the Vice Chancellor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Deemed University, Pune. Currently he is an Honorary Professor with the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and INSA Senior Scientist and Adjunct Professor with the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. Prior to this he was a Professor with the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has published close to 1100 papers in refereed International Journals and refereed International Conference Proceedings and has authored 29 technical reports in the areas of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Computer Architecture, CAD of VLSI Systems, Theoretical Computer Science, Real-Time Systems, Soft Computing, and Computational Neuroscience. He is a co-editor/co-author of twenty two books and has authored 13 chapters in other books. He has supervised over 30 Doctoral theses and over 160 Masters’ theses in the above areas.
He has served as the President of the Advanced Computing and Communications Society, and the Computational Intelligence Society of India. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Region 10.
