Professor Yiu-ming Cheung Receives President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work & HKBU Innovation Award

Professor Yiu-ming Cheung, the Chair Professor in Artificial Intelligence of the Department of Computer Science, has been bestowed with two prestigious accolades: the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work and the Innovation Award presented by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). These esteemed recognitions acknowledge Professor Cheung's exceptional contributions to academic research and innovative technology.

Since joining the Department of Computer Science in 2001, Professor Cheung has emerged as a distinguished scholar in artificial intelligence (AI), securing substantial grants for his remarkable research. His interests encompass machine learning, visual computing, and their practical applications. Professor Cheung's scholarly impact is further evidenced by his ranking as one of the World's Top 1% Most-cited Scientists in AI and Image processing by Stanford University since 2019 for five consecutive years. This notable recognition highlights his pivotal role in advancing AI research and his significant influence within the global scientific community.

This year, Professor Cheung was awarded the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work, recognising his outstanding scholastic achievements. Additionally, he was also the recipient of the HKBU Innovation Award for his pioneering project, titled "Lip-password for Personal Identity Verification." This innovative project combines password information with distinctive lip motion characteristics to establish secure personal identity verification system. Unlike conventional biometrics, such as face recognition, fingerprint identification, and iris scanning, which remain static even if compromised, the lip-password solution offers changeability, enhancing its resistance against theft. Furthermore, it offers robust resilience to mimicry, background noise, and distance, setting a new standard in personal identity verification. This award acknowledges Professor Cheung's innovative approach to enhancing security and privacy in identity verification mechanisms.

Upon receiving these distinguished awards, Professor Cheung expressed his profound gratitude and excitement, stating, "I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive these prestigious awards.
