The research project led by Professor Yiu-Ming Cheung on Lip-password-based Technology for Identity Verification wins the Gold Medal at the 15th International Invention Fair in the Middle East.

Professor Yiu-Ming Cheung, Chair Professor of the Department, received a Gold Medal for his pioneering project titled “Lip-password-based Technology for Identity Verification” at the 15th International Invention Fair in the Middle East. This accolade recognised his valuable contributions to the advancement of biometric technology.

“I am deeply grateful for this award. This recognition highlights the importance of innovation in biometric security, reflects our research team's unwavering commitment to advancing digital identity verification and driving positive impacts across various industries,” said Professor Cheung.

This award-winning project addresses the security issues in digital identity verification by employing a lip-password-based approach that takes into account lip motion characteristics and password information. The lip-password can be regarded as an innovative biometric-changeable recognition technology, which is capable of effectively identify impostors and distinguish between identical twins. The lip-password-based personal identity verification method is resistant to mimicry and environmental noise, paving the way for more secure and efficient identity verification solutions that meet the security demands of various sectors, including financial transactions and secure access. This innovation marks a significant breakthrough in biometric technology, greatly enhancing personal security and laying the groundwork for future advancements in identity verification.

The International Invention Fair in the Middle East (IIFME), organised by the Kuwait Science Club, is one of the most prestigious invention exhibitions in the region. Since its inception in 2007, the fair has highlighted the groundbreaking work of 352 inventors from over 150 countries, showcasing more than 200 inventions across scientific and technological fields. This year, innovations from HKBU achieved remarkable success, securing four Gold Medals at the 15th IIFME.
