Ir Professor Byron Choi Named HKIE Fellow for Pioneering Information Engineering Contributions

Ir Professor Byron Choi, Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) and Professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been conferred as a Fellow of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) in the Information Discipline. This prestigious recognition honours his exceptional contributions to the field of information engineering.
On receiving this honour, Ir Professor Choi remarked, “I am deeply honoured to be recognised as a Fellow of HKIE. This motivates me to continue connecting teaching and research in information engineering and contribute to the academic community and industry.”
Ir Professor Choi served on HKIE’s accreditation teams for Bachelor's programmes in Computer Science or Information Security at universities in Hong Kong. Ir Professor Choi’s research interests encompass visual graph query processing, time series analysis, database security, and view update and incremental maintenance. His impactful work has been published in top-tier conferences and journals, including ACM SIGMOD, PVLDB/VLDB, IEEE ICDE, IEEE TKDE, VLDBJ, and AAAI. In addition to this recent accolade, he has received numerous awards, including being named one of the best reviewers for ACM SIGMOD 2023. Furthermore, Professor Choi has served on the Editorial Board of Distributed and Parallel Databases as an Associate Editor since March 2025.
Established in 1947, the HKIE Fellowship is bestowed upon engineers who demonstrate exceptional expertise and contribute to the advancement of Hong Kong’s technological landscape.
