Prof. Cheung Yiu Ming of the Department of Computer Science won the Gold Medal with Congratulations of Jury at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva with his invention “Lip-password: Double Security System for Identity Authentication”. Together with other three outstanding projects, all HKBU teams won top prizes and HKBU is the only institution in Hong Kong that all the projects it submitted won gold medals in three consecutive years.

The “Lip-password: Double Security System for Identity Authentication” invented by Prof. Cheung Yiu-ming introduces a new technique, which utilises a person’s lip motions to create a password. This system verifies a person’s identity by simultaneously matching the password content with the underlying behavioural characteristics of lip movement. Its uniqueness includes double-security for access control, resistant to mimicry and has no language boundary. It can be used in financial transaction authentication or used together with other biometrics to enhance the security level of systems.

Extending his hearty congratulations to the winning teams, President Prof. Roland Chin said these award-winning inventions are the pride of not just HKBU but of Hong Kong as a whole. Their achievement and creativity won accolades from international experts because they are of high social impact and have brought amazing solutions to real-world problems.

International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is the world’s most prestigious innovation exhibition, which is arranged under the patronage of the Swiss Federal Government, the Republic and Canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) aims to showcase innovations and inventions from around the globe.
