Professor Yiu-ming Cheung, Chair Professor in Artificial Intelligence, has been honoured as a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in the class of 2024, recognising his remarkable contributions to the fields of cluster analysis and visual computing, along with their applications.
This year, 21 new IAPR Fellows have been elected worldwide, with Professor Cheung being the sole recipient from Hong Kong. “It is my profound honour to receive this esteemed award,” Professor Cheung articulated. “This recognition inspires me to further my research in pattern recognition, as well as the related scientific areas, and make a meaningful impact on the academic community and beyond.”
In addition to this recent accolade, Professor Cheung's significant academic impact has been acknowledged by Stanford University, which has ranked him among the world’s top 1% most-cited scientists in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing for six consecutive years since 2019. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and was named as Senior Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2023.
Established in 1994, the prestigious biennial IAPR Fellow Award is presented to no more than 0.25% of the total IAPR membership, recognising scholars’ distinguished contributions to the field of pattern recognition and IAPR activities. The selection process evaluates both service to IAPR and scientific contributions to the discipline.
