Professor Cheung Yiu-ming Elected Fellow of Institute of Engineering and Technology

Professor Cheung Yiu-ming of the Department of Computer Science was recently elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in recognition of his outstanding research achievement and leadership in professional organisations. In the 12 months from November 2015 to October 2016, there were over 200 newly elected IET Fellows worldwide, with just five of them coming from Hong Kong.

The fellowship is presented to individuals who have sustained high levels of achievement, with the criteria for acceptance including innovation and professional service for five or more years. It is the highest grade of membership of the Institute and all applications are peer-assessed in order to reflect the honour’s authority.

Professor Cheung’s research interests include machine learning, pattern recognition, image and video processing, and optimization. These have a variety of applications including in big data analysis and identity authentication in security-access control systems. He is the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Chapter of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and Vice Chair of the Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics (TCII) of the IEEE Computer Society. He has over 170 articles published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.

The IET is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions with over 167,000 members in 150 countries.
