In recent year, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and big data have become buzzwords for companies who are spearheading business with digital transformation. To help our Business Computing and Data Analytics (BCDA) undergraduate students stay ahead of the curve, in particular the freshmen, the first-ever BCDA Bootcamp was successfully held on 11 September 2021.

Professor Joseph Ng, the Programme Director of BCDA, thanked industry partners for their ongoing support to the Programme in nurturing future business cum data science leaders in the opening remark. “The collaboration between the Programme and different industry partners signifies one of the cornerstones of education – blending learning with knowledge and insightful sharing from industry experts,” he said.

Two industry partners, Professor Samson Tai, Former Chief Technology Officer of IBM, Hong Kong and Adjunct Professor, Department of Finance and Decision Sciences, HKBU and Mr. Ho Wa Wong, Data Scientist, Beta Lab, Lane Crawford and Joyce, were invited to share their working experience with students and encouraged them to grasp as many learning opportunities as they could in the university life in the panel session.

After the panel talk, 3 teams of 5 students competed for the championship in a design workshop, which let them had a taste of brainstorming some creative solutions to a business and IT-related problem with design thinking methods.

This BCDA Bootcamp attracted 15 students and provided an experiential learning opportunity for them to gain deeper industry knowledge and exposure of business and computing from seasoned professionals. They were thrilled as the bootcamp served a great opportunity to connect with freshmen, senior students and faculty members. Thanks for the support of BCDA Programme Committee Members including Professor Joseph Ng, Dr. Jean Lai, Professor William Cheung and Dr. Byron Choi from Department of Computer Science, as well as Dr. Monique Wan and Professor Yuk-shing Cheng from Department of Economics were warmly presented to welcome the freshmen on this special occasion.
